Readers' and Writers’ Workshop

The children have been working diligently on their Robert Munsch stories and they are fantastic!  They have taken an ordinary every day problem and exaggerated it, just like the author does in his own stories! After working on their “sloppy copy” or rough draft, they conferenced with me and went back to self-edit.  It was hard to cut out dialogue, or parts of the story!  However, as authors we had to make sure that the content of the story stayed on topic and wasn’t too long!

We also started our Non-Fiction Research Projects!  Everyone chose an animal to learn about and we went to the library to find non-fiction books. Ms. Pierce taught us how to find our books using the call numbers and made a special trip to room 32, to help us get started.  There is a lot of information to sort through! We have started taking notes on our animal, while building a glossary (one of the 8 non-fiction text features that will be included in the Project), and keeping track of our sources!

Math

Second Grade loves Fractions!  We have learned that fractions show us the “part” of a “whole”, and if you rip a paper in two pieces it does not give you two wholes! We have learned the special name for the top fraction is “numerator”, or part, and the special name for the bottom fraction is “denominator”, or whole.  We also know that if the same number is on the top and bottom that the fraction equals one!  Comparing fractions is next!

Social Studies

The Classroom Mall Project was so much fun!  So, before we start the next unit, we finished up with an in depth paragraph, reflecting on everything that went into your students business.  From the money they earned, to the materials used, to the success of their business, the children had to write a super second grade paragraph!  They used lots of vocabulary in their paragraphs to show how much they learned, like human resources, raw materials, and free Enterprise!  Nice job everyone!
